WHO INVENTED THE CLOVER CLUB COCKTAIL?
The Clover Club cocktail was invented in the early 1900’s in Philadelphia for the newly established Clover Club, which was founded in 1896 by a group of prominent journalists. The organization regularly met at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel, and over time, grew and expanded into a club for Philadelphia’s upper class. The Clover Club in essentially a riff on the Clover Leaf cocktail, which was first published in 1908, one year before the first known recipe of the Clover Club. The first reference to the Clover Club dates back to 1909 and can be found in Paul E. Lowe’s book Drinks: how to mix and how to serve. The only elements that differ from one another are the glassware and the garnish. Despite the similarities in both cocktails, only the Clover Club has survived throughout the years. Whichever name you choose for this cocktail, there is a reason why it has stood the test of time and is sure to become a new favorite for you and yours.
WHAT IS THE BEST GIN TO USE IN A CLOVER CLUB?
Any London dry gin will work best in a Clover Club. Traditionally, this style of gin has a good amount of citrus which accentuates the flavors found in the cocktail.
WHAT GLASS IS A CLOVER CLUB SERVED IN?
A Clover Club is typically served in a coupe glass, but you could use any stemmed glassware if you don’t own a coupe.
WHICH MANZANILLA SHERRY IS BEST FOR A CLOVER CLUB COCKTAIL?
We chose Lustau Manzanilla Papirusa due to its high amount of salinity and its crisp and clean finish. Any biologically aged sherry will work in the cocktail too, but it is preferred a wine with an outstanding briny character which enhances the overall drinking experience.
Also, this recipe includes Vermut Lustau Dry to enhance herbal and citrus complexity balancing Clover Club’s tart raspberry and lemon flavors. This manzanilla-dry vermouth combination creates a well-rounded, refreshing cocktail with a sophisticated, nuanced profile perfect for a light, easy to drink alternative.
