Like many of the classic cocktails we all revere, the Manhattan has inspired many variations over the years, but none as beloved and famous as the Vieux Carre. New Orleans has a special place in American cocktail culture and has provided several classics that have stood the test of time. The Vieux Carre is a split-base cocktail consisting of rye whiskey and cognac and is an ode to the French Quarter in New Orleans, where French, Spanish, Creole and American architecture collide to create a feel that screams nostalgia and romance. The Vieux Carre is a more complex and herbaceous cousin of the Manhattan, much like the Sazerac is to the Old-Fashioned, where the addition of Benedictine, along with the use of both Peychaud’s and Angostura bitters, create a synergy with the sweet vermouth that creates a dangerously smooth, complex, and viscous cocktail.

The recipe was first printed in Stanley Clispby Arthur’s Famous New Orleans Drinks and how to mix ‘em (1938). Our Vieux Carre is even more complex than the standard recipe due to the sherry found in our Lustau Vermut Rojo, as well as our Lustau Brandy de Jerez Solera Gran Reserva.
